Understand the meaning behind the NWABF logo

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, UNITED STATES, April 30, 2021 / — If you’ve been following our NWABF blog and social feeds, you’ll see that great things are happening for the growth of the sustainable aviation fuel industry, (SAF), and the vital role that Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels LLC is playing.

But in-between the big news like major funding announcements, we want to give you more of an insight into what makes our company tick. Earlier in the year, we profiled our ‘Championship SAF Super Bowl Team’ and each of the team members who are helping to lead our efforts to become a leader in SAF. These individuals are experts in their respective positions. Today, we want to delve deeper into our culture and why this Logo has so much meaning to our Team.

Notice the unique logo for Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels LLC. It was created and painted by hand by artist Linda Windell, a self-taught Native American artist of Creek/Cherokee descent, and member of the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, OK.

Our logo is intentionally different from the digitally-composed logos of other companies in oil & gas and sustainable aviation fuel industries. It had to be! We take our involvement in the SAF space, where we can offer improvement to the environment, very seriously.

The NWABF logo depicts a Bald Eagle holding a tree branch and flying over Mt. Rainier, which is synonymous with our location. The Bald Eagle is a classic statement, representing the Strength, Grace, and Tenacity of our operation and our team. The Bald Eagle is revered by the Tribes of our Nation.

The tree branch held in the Bald Eagle’s talons depicts the type of feedstock wastes we will receive from local Northwest resources, which will help to clear the forest floors, help prevent forest fires and offer better habitats for plant and animal life. The Totem Poles which are guarding the Bay at the Project’s Entrance, first came into existence in the Northwest from Northwest Tribes. We simply want to honor those Tribes with these symbols.

Last, but not least, the incredible symbolism of the airplane flying in the background over Mt Rainier depicts the positive effect we will have on the environment by eliminating most of the harmful fuel emissions now being put into the environment by airlines using petroleum-based jet fuel. This is a “full-circle” depiction of the earth’s elements benefitting man’s ingenuity and his inert desire and need for travel.

The NWABF logo has deep meaning for the company, its Founder, who is a member of the Okmulgee Creek Tribe of Oklahoma, and its principals. We believe our logo captures the emotional strength that we bring to the local communities, the environment, the industry, and the world.

We are lucky to have worked with Linda Windell on our logo. Linda’s work has been shown and still hangs in the Cherokee Museum located on the Cherokee Reservation in Tahlequah, OK, among other places. Known for her incredible work depicting real-life images of historically documented Native American War Ponies, as well as Native American Youth, Ms. Windell’s work has garnered two national awards, where she beat out companies like Kodak and IBM for her insightful and delicate artwork of a Corporate Brochure for an upstart Native American owned and operated Company located outside of Chicago, IL. Linda’s work was even selected for the cover of the Wisconsin Paint Horse Journal. Linda has loyal collectors throughout North and South America, Canada, parts of Europe and Asia. She has done “Commission” work painting Arabian Horses for Royalty in Saudi Arabia.

STEM NOLA Teams with Obatala Science, CellSpring to Expose Students to Careers and Medical Research at Biotech Startups

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA , UNITED STATES, April 30, 2021 / — STEM NOLA is proud to partner with Obatala Sciences and CellSpring to engage at least a dozen high school students from the greater New Orleans area in a series of courses that will expose teens to careers in biotechnology startup companies. This extraordinary program focuses on providing high school students with exposure-rich, hands-on opportunities to engage deeply in work in the realm of STEM.

Over the course of three Saturday sessions on May 8, 15 and 22, students will receive comprehensive lab exposure to the work at both companies involving tissue engineering, stem cell research (stem cells isolated from adult fat tissue), and preclinical evaluation of potential therapeutics. Students will learn the route that new medicines and treatments take to the clinic and the steps that ensure they are safe. Further, students will learn the role that tissue engineering plays in improving the testing of new drugs.

Since 2014, STEM NOLA has engaged more than 65,000 students – mostly underserved students of color – in hands-on STEM project-based learning.

Ohio’s Oil & Gas Industry Off to Strong Start in 2021

PENN VALLEY, PA, U.S., April 29, 2021 / — Ohio’s oil and gas production started out slowly in 2021, but the diminishing number of COVID-19 cases and accelerated vaccine roll-out have resulted in an increase in production that is supporting renewed petroleum product demand and new economic growth opportunities, according to Christina Polesovsky, the American Petroleum Institute’s Associate Director-Ohio.

Polesovsky will be a presenter at the Ninth Annual Utica Midstream Conference, slated for May 20, at the Holiday Inn Canton (Ohio) Belden Village. The one-day conference is presented by Shale and the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce.

“Ohio’s natural gas production from January 2020 to January 2021, was down 1.6 percent, year-over-year,” Polesovsky said. “With nine rigs drilling for gas in the Ohio Utica as of April 1, 2021, however, per-rig productivity is near record performance.”

Drilling permits granted by the state of Ohio fell by roughly 200 from 2019 to 2020, according to Polesovsky. But permits issued in the first 10 weeks of 2020, compared with the same period in 2021, increased by one-third – from 46 to 61 – provide another strong indicator of industry growth in 2021.

“It’s definitely a good sign,” Polesovsky said.

"Roughly 100 days into the Biden administration, Polesovsky said the oil & gas industry “stands ready to work with the administration on a number of issues – including climate change.”

We don’t have to choose between a lower carbon future and sustaining and growing the more than 10 million American jobs supported by the industry,” Polesovsky said. “We can and must do both.”

Polesovsky said currently there are numerous O&G-related legislative and regulatory proposals under consideration in Columbus with potential to impact Ohio’s shale industry.

“We always try to impart on policymakers that Ohio is constantly competing (with other states and countries) for industry investment,” Polesovsky said. “We are fortunate that most policymakers understand the balance needed to keep Ohio business-friendly in order to retain and grow investment in our industry.”

Innovative Microgrid Community Planned for Maryland Community of Fairmount Heights in Prince George's County

Housing Initiative Partnership, Pepco & Emera Technologies Awarded $200,000 from Maryland Energy Administration for Innovative Microgrid Community

BALTIMORE, MD, UNITED STATES, April 29, 2021 / — The Housing Initiative Partnership (HIP), a green nonprofit affordable housing developer based in Prince George’s County, along with Pepco and Emera Technologies, have been awarded $200,000 from the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) to construct a new residential microgrid to power a small subdivision of new net zero single family homes in Fairmount Heights, MD. This public-private partnership will bring transformative microgrid technology to new low-to-moderate income residential construction project in Prince George’s County.

The grant builds on efforts catalyzed by is an extension of the MEA’s Resilient Maryland program and will support a community solar and battery energy storage system, as well as the associated racking, mounting, and wiring equipment, for six low-to-moderate income households. This innovative pilot project, which received design and feasibility funding in 2020, will enable the new homeowners to generate their own energy independent of the public electrical grid.

“Supporting the development of new and affordable, clean energy homes for first time low-to-moderate income home buyers is a sustainable model Maryland can build upon,” stated Governor Larry Hogan.

"This strategic partnership with the State of Maryland, Pepco, Housing Initiative Partnership and Emera Technologies is paving the way for the first block microgrid community in the state,” stated Dr. Mary Beth Tung, MEA Director.

“This generous grant from the Maryland Energy Administration allows Pepco and our community partners a unique opportunity to provide affordable and equitable access to sustainable energy, while at the same time helping Fairmount Heights achieve its revitalization and climate change goals,” said Dave Velazquez, president and CEO of Pepco Holdings. “By working collaboratively with the MEA, the Housing Initiative Partnership, Emera Technologies and other key stakeholders on this project, we are executing our vision and commitment to supporting a low-carbon future in the communities where we live and for the customers we serve.”

This innovative project was originally proposed to the MEA Resilient Maryland program in 2020, to support and develop microgrid and other distributed energy resource (DER) systems that expand clean, reliable and flexible energy solutions to Maryland. This microgrid is an integral part of creating a community that makes affordable, sustainable, and resilient new construction housing more accessible to Maryland’s low-to-moderate income population.

“HIP is focused on developing affordable housing that is both healthy and highly energy efficient in older neighborhoods across Prince George’s County. This will be our second project in Fairmount Heights focused on passive design and affordable home ownership,” said Stephanie Prange-Proestel, HIP’s Deputy Director, who serves as the project manager for the development team.

HIP expects to break ground on Phase I of the development in the fall of 2021. Six single-family homes will be built on vacant lots on 60th Place in Fairmount Heights using modular construction, designed to meet the U.S. Department of Energy's Zero Ready Energy standards and the Passive House Institute’s PHIUS+ 2018 standard. These rigorous requirements ensure energy savings, comfort, health, and durability. HIP will market the homes to first-time homebuyers earning 80% or less of the area median income.

The collaboration of community partners looks forward to providing electricity generation solutions like rooftop community solar to modernize grid technologies in neighborhoods such as Fairmount Heights, which will help meet state and county de-carbonization goals. Emera Technologies’ residential microgrid solution BlockEnergy will allow for homes to share the benefits of combined renewable generation. The community microgrid system also provides reliability and resiliency for the neighborhood.

Fairmount Heights, Maryland, the second oldest African American majority municipality in Prince George's County, is home to just under 2,000 residents and a model location for clean and resilient development. The town has set ambitious goals for 2021 to revitalize vacant land with projects that will encourage citizen engagement and attract growth while minimizing its carbon footprint and promoting a green, sustainable future. This microgrid helps the neighborhood to become a Sustainable Maryland community.

Pepco and Emera Technologies, LLC will install the microgrid elements with infrastructure. For the first three years after residents move into the new homes, Pepco will operate a pilot in conjunction with the other partners to collect data for specific metrics related to the system and potential benefits to the distribution system. Pepco will share additional details regarding the design, goals, proposed metrics and timeline associated with the three-year pilot with the Maryland Public Service Commission, community members and the public later this year.

Affordable access to sustainable energy has taken center stage in communities across America in the face of increasing threats from climate change, which can disproportionately affect our most vulnerable communities. The Fairmount Heights Net Zero community will provide replicable, scalable, and cost-effective solutions that will serve as models for wide-scale adoption across Maryland. SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES, April 29, 2021 / — Approximately 1,000 people die, and 30,000 people are injured every year due to electrical accidents. While electricity typically transmits without incident, there are times when the electrical path becomes disrupted. When this happens, the current can flow through anything or anyone in its path, causing electrical shock, internal and externals burns, and other serious injuries, including electrocution.

“Electricity is referred to as the silent killer since it is often undetectable, that is, it typically cannot be seen, heard or smelled,” says Erin Hollinshead, executive director of Safe Electricity. “While you might notice some electrical hazards — electrical outlets that are discolored and warm to the touch or symptoms of other electrical wiring issues, for example — many others are invisible and imperceptible,” she warns. “Always respect electricity and the potential danger that comes with its distribution and use; in fact, always err on the side of caution concerning electrical sources.”

Hollinshead says while there are precautions you can take both inside and outside your home when it comes to potential electrical dangers, many people are less familiar with (or pay less attention to) potential electrical hazards in the great outdoors.

“When outside, always be aware of overhead power line locations and never come within 10 feet of a line — for example, while trimming trees or carrying a long object such as an extension ladder, pool skimming pole or any other far-reaching or extendable tool,” she advises. “In addition, respect underground utility lines by calling 8-1-1 or your state’s underground location service at least a few days prior to starting a digging project,” she says, adding that the service is free.

A power line does not have to be sparking or arcing (giving off a flame) or buzzing or hissing to be live. In other words, it can look harmless and lifeless and still be energized. “If you see an overhead power line that is sagging or down, always assume it is live (energized), and NEVER go near one,” warns Hollinshead.

Safe Electricity offers the following reminders concerning electricity:

Power line safety
• Always assume a power line is energized and deadly.
• A power line does not have to be arcing (giving off a flame), sparking or making a sound (hissing or buzzing) to be live (energized).
• Never go near an overhead power line, including one that is sagging or on the ground.
• If the electrical path is broken due to a damaged overhead or underground line, electrical current can travel through the ground and electrify nearby objects, such as a vehicle, a metal fence, a shovel or other equipment or a person.
• Use the same safety precautions around a damaged or dislodged padmount transformer (“green box”) or any other malfunctioning electrical equipment/source.
• The contents of a padmount transformer box are the same as those found on a power pole and are connected to underground power lines.

At the scene of an accident
• If you are in a car, tractor cab or any type of machinery/equipment that comes in contact with or is near a power line, pole, guy wire or padmount transformer, staying in the car or cab is usually the safest place to be. Stay where you are, call 9-1-1, and wait for the electric utility to arrive and deenergize the power. Do not get out until you have the go-ahead from utility workers.
• If you must exit a vehicle or cab due to smoke or fire, there is a recommended method that can help avoid electrocution. Before jumping out, maintain a solid stance and cross your arms across your chest to avoid touching the car or cab while exiting. Make a solid jump to the ground with your feet together. Then, while keeping your feet together, make solid hops and hop away as far as you can.
• If you see someone in trouble who could be exposed to electrical current, do not run toward the scene to help. Instead, call 9-1-1, and warn others not to approach the area.

In your yard
• Always look up and look out when using a long pole, extended tool or ladder. Always carry long items horizontally instead of vertically.
• Do not trim trees or limbs that come within 10 feet of a power line. Only specialized tree trimmers who are certified to clear trees within 10 feet of a power line should do so.
• Always be careful when you are elevated: on your roof, on a hydraulic or scissor lift or high atop a ladder, for instance. Always have 10 feet between you and a power line at all times. Also apply the 10-foot rule to an object you are holding or touching since electricity could flow through the object to you.
• Before digging in your yard, always call 8-1-1 or your state’s underground utility marking service two to three days prior to digging. An underground utility line is damaged every 9 minutes. The utility marking service is free.

While at play
• If anything gets caught in a power line, such as a drone or kite, never try to retrieve it yourself. Call your local electric utility for assistance.
• Teach kids to never climb trees with power lines running above or through them. Also teach them not to sit or play on a padmount transformer/green box.
